Wearable brain-computer interface (BCI) Systems and their Advances

Fri. 12 Feb 2021

In this post, we would like to discuss brain-computer interface (BCI), what it is and the new advances in this field. There has been a rapid growth of studies in the field of brain-computer interface in the last decade.

A brain-computer interface often includes:

  • A set of sensors to acquire neurophysiological intention signals
  • A wired or wireless system to transmit this data
  • A processing component

All these three parts are needed in order to capture the data from brain activities and to analyze it as a means of a direct communication channel between the brain and an external device, such as:

  • Computer applications
  • Home appliances
  • Prosthetic devices

With the new avenues opened because of technological advances in the science and technology, there is a great potential for real-time embedded systems and signal processing techniques, which translates into smaller and lighter device size, higher speed, more accuracy, noninvasiveness. However, the most important aspect to be considered in the development of new BCIs is the needs of the users.

Although we have come a long way from the bulky original wired BCI devices, there is a great potential for yet further improvements to b explored and implemented. We need to further study the possibilities to improve the quality the signals captured, to decrease the noise captured, to design miniaturized stylish designs, along with more diverse applications that can be applied to our day-to-day lives.
